We believe that our success as a company is measured by more than just financial targets. The positive contribution we can make to lives, communities and the environment through good business is important to our long-term success. This is why Corporate Social Responsibility is an important part of our business.

UNGC - Global Corporate Citizenship

DAL Group was the driving force behind the introduction of the UN’s ‘Global Compact’ in Sudan – a worldwide initiative for businesses committed to ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption. With Over 8700 corporate participants and other stakeholders from over 130 countries, the UNGC is the largest voluntary corporate responsibility initiative in the world.

DAL Group’s has played an active role in the set-up of Sudan’s Local Global Compact Network from the very beginning and continues to act as a key economic player and responsible corporate citizen. This places the company among the ranks of large companies engaging in responsible business practices, not only locally but globally. Today, DAL Group are active members of the UNGC in Sudan and abroad with senior management representation in the Leaders Summit along with other international private sector companies.

Disability Employment

DAL Food Industries as part of DAL Food created a unique model back in 2002 when its senior management initiated the employment of people with disabilities as part of the company’s work force. Currently, DFI employs  hard hearing and  physically challenged staff acting out its rooted belief that supporting people with certain disabilities is a vital Corporate Responsibility practice that increases the well-being of society at large.

This practice was initiated by recruiting two staff and then gradually, the number increased to 30 staff by year 2014. This figure represents 12% of the total production staff ratio which is higher than the 2.5% minimum requirement of as aimed by the Federal Ministry of Social Development for integrating physically challenged persons within an institutions’ work force.

The physically challenged staff is evaluated annually based on their professional performance and accordingly they are rewarded for their success and merits.  Currently they represent an important group of the company work force integrated into the work system, respected and considered by all as an integral part of DFI’s success proving that a disability does not mean inability. We hope to see that number multiply in our other companies seeking appropriate positions for people with disabilities wherever they can add value, and they can!

The ISO26000 Guidance on Social responsibility

The ISO26000 Guidance on Social responsibility is more than just another quality standard; it is one that takes organizations to the type of responsible quality that serves the planet’s dire need for sustainable development. DAL Group was proud to host the Introductory ISO26000 First Regional Workshop in 2011 attended 30 ISO experts were gathered here in Sudan representing 20 countries from Africa in demonstration in its commitment to corporate responsibility.

The workshop was a celebration of the unified desire of the different countries in the region to practice social responsibility for the sustainable development. The event was led by the Sudanese Standards Metrology Organization (SSMO) in their relevant capacity as regulators and standard setters with a high level of attention from its key players starting with its Director General who commended and thanked DAL for taking the lead and setting a model for the private sector.

Forums

DAL Group is the first private sector entity in Sudan to adopt the novel approach of organizing a forum that brings different stakeholders together to discuss and engage on issues of common concern and interest. This has been based on the premise that social and economic development goes hand in hand; and that a business only thrives when its society thrives. The DAL Forum are divided into the Environment, Food and Cultural forum each addressing issues of concern or interest to their relevant stakeholders.

The DAL Forum is a clear demonstration that the company holds knowledge, culture and arts in high esteem and understands that the real development of a country is based on much more than economic terms and measures. It’s only through our stakeholders engagements and interactions can we really promote dialogue and only through our concerted efforts can we bring about positive change.
